  The Damascus styling of the blade produces the hard cutting core as well as producing an elegant-waved pattern on the blade. This styling protects the hard inner core and makes the blade's slicing action much smoother.

The Shun Premier, the latest in the line of Shun knives, consists of high carbon VG-10, "Japanese Super Steel" covered with 32 layers of Damascus Stainless steel. High carbon VG-10 keeps the edge sharper for longer periods of time without having to constantly sharpen the blade. 16 layers of Damascus Stainless on each side of the blade makes it strong and flexible and also reduces friction during slicing. Its hammered finish, called "Tsuchime," reduces drag when cutting.
